Talkhouse Weekend Playlist: The ’60s-Infused Vibe of Walrus

The band shares a Canadian classic, the Walrus tour theme song, and an Oasis song that isn't Wonderwall.

Starting the weekend off a day early here at Talkhouse, the Canadian band Walrus recently created a playlist for us. The band describes their upcoming debut album as: “a fuzzed- out electric blanket of soul with unrepentant strands of authentic heaviosity.” The album, Family Hangover, is out June 9th, and is available for pre-order now. The band has many influences in their sound, from the drone sound of Spacemen-3 to the hard rock of Black Sabbath. I suggest starting with their song “Glam.” Their playlist is also hard to pin down with 60s garage sounds, soul, and even rap. Be on the lookout for Family Hangover, out June 9th, and catch the band this summer as they tour North America and Europe.

The Grapes of Wrath – “What Was Going Through My Head”
I like this song because it’s a Canadian classic and it’s Beatles through and through

Kate Tempest – “Europe is Lost”
We were in Washington playing a show and someone put her most recent record on. We were blown away, it was so cool. Listened to it in the van after that. Can’t help but listen closely to the words, getting caught up in the story she’s telling.

The Ramones – “Bonzo Goes To Bitburg”
Every Ramones song is an anthem for me but I honestly can’t even count how many times we all sang along to this one in the van. Safe to say it’s on repeat. Also on our future cover list so look forward to that.

Wiley – “On A Level”
I am a huge fan of hip hop but always stuck to old school. The first new school of rap that really got me excited lately is the Grime scene. Chose Wiley cause around here he might not be as well known as Skepta but deserves a lot of credit in that scene.

The Monkees – “Porpoise Song”
Who would ever think this was the Monkees? I see why Marge had the lunch box now

Erykah Badu – “Window Seat”
I love Erykah Badu’s music. Always keep coming back to this one. So groovy.

Jon McKiel – “High Five”
Jon McKiel’s new album is one of the best things to come out of the east coast of Canada for a while. The whole album is great and the band is stacked

Bill Withers – “Lovely Day”
This song immediately puts me in a good mood when I hear it. Nuff said.

The Eagles – “Take It To The Limit”
This one is basically the Walrus tour theme song, makes us all cry I think

Oasis – “Some Might Say”
One of us had to pick an Oasis song…anyway brother here’s Wonderwall

Broadcast – “Come On Let’s Go”
This song sounds like a dream…

Roy Buchanan – “Sweet Dreams”
He’s got the best telecaster tone and is one of the most dynamic freaks to ever pick up a guitar. I shed a single tear every time I hear this number. It will be played at my funeral.
